The Nokia E55 is peaking my interest

June 10th, 2009 · 15 Comments

02162009181 - Share on OviI have been thinking about the Nokia E55 a great deal of the last few weeks and months.  I was introduced to it back in February at Mobile World Congress and instantly fell in love with it.  I am a heavy mobile emailer but feel the smaller the device the better, within reason.  Not surprisingly I was instantly attracted to the E55 and it’s good looks, long battery life and sheer thinness (is that really a word?).  I am madly hooked on my E71 and have a hard time sometimes reviewing other devices because it’s so hard to take my main sim out of the E71.  I do but it’s hard.

Back to the E55, I have very high expectations for it even though Nokia cut the North American variant.  I’m happy that the Euro version is triband 3G and hope the 1900mghz band will cover me adequately in Southern California and when I travel around the States.  I only got to play with the E55 for a short time in Spain but remember liking the feel of the keyboard.  I’m hoping I can get used to the new style keyboard.  I’m not sure what to call it but take a look at the pictures to see what I’m talking about.  It has 2 letters per button but is set up like a QWERTY.

I think Nokia may have something very special with it if they market well.  I see more and more people of all ages with phones that have full keyboards and I think this is an attractive enough device especially in white to really acquire a large user following.

If you have any questions about it I will try to answer them, just post them below.

Hi Jeb. When I first saw the the E55 (pictures not for real) I thought it would be the one for me. Seemed a good compromise between full qwerty & T9 for email etc. However having used a (business provided) BlackBerry Pearl for a few weeks I’m not so sure. I hate the Pearl with a vengeance, largely because I find the keypad so awkward. Is the E55 keypad similar in terms of the way you have to type & use predictive text or has Nokia some up with something really cool that blows the BB version away?

    Jonathan,
I’ve never used a Blackberry Pearl so I could not compare. I didn’t get long enough with it to give it a good play but it seemed like it should be alright.

Do it! I haven’t see any of them around, that makes them rare. Plus with the n97 coming out this should make the price drop a little. I was thinking of getting a e75 but my E71 has just been too good for me to upgrade. Post a review if you end up picking one up.

The golden question – you don’t possibly have an idea when they’re finally going to release it?

Good write-up though, I’m also curious about the keypad.

Pablo the E55 isn’t released yet. When it is I will do my best to get a review unit and have a proper review.
I have both the E71 and the E75 and both are extremely nice handsets but I still prefer the E71. It’s solely because of the form factor. I really like the E75 but prefer the form factor of the E71 over the E75.

Michael I have heard rumors and keep in mind I don’t have any inside knowledge but I’m just repeating a rumor I heard. The rumor is that the E55 will be out by August. That doesn’t mean it won’t get delayed but that’s all I’ve heard.

Hey Jeb, can you tell me if it is going to released in India or not, as in starting they kept it in Indian website but now it is missing.. :( … i think we may have to settle with e52… but we like e55.. its best i feel

    Piyush,
I would think it would be released in India but I don’t know if it will be on a carrier. Also keep a look out for the E72.
    Thanks for reading.

    Jeb,
I heard rumour that E72 & E52 are going to be released in India by end of August. Somehow I think they wont release E55. :-(
Do you have any inside news? Also can you confirm if E72 doesnt suppport n-gage?
    Suyog

    @Suyog,
I don’t have any inside news, I wish I did. The E72 is supposed to launch in August. I haven’t heard anything about the E52 in a very long time so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it.

    Thanks for reading,
    Jeb

@Jeb, We are almost in November and E55 is still nowhere to be seen here in India. Nokia guys have not released single new S60 phone since long time.
we still dont have E52, E55, 5630XM,5530XM or 5730XM. Most of the world have these phones.
The way Nokia is working in India , I think they are getting overconfident.(They have over 60% market share, may be more)

BTW, when you are posting review of E55?

    Suyog,
I honestly don’t know what Nokia plans are for most regions. I like the E55 and would love to give one a try but more importantly I have no idea when to expect it if ever in India. I think they have something that could really explode with the E55 but I don’t see Nokia pushing it at all. It has so much potential but nothing is being done about it as far as I can see and hear.
    Oh well.

Thanks so much for reading my blog,
    Jeb

I heard rumour that They may release E55 with E72 and not release E52 here at all, but thats good news. When that happens , we have to see.
Nokia is really helping grey market as i am tempted to buy one from there.
Why dont you have something like subscribe to comment alert? That makes very easy for users to get updates.Anyways I have added your blog in my RSS feeds.

Just wanted to throw in a question on E55 call answer button. It appears to be set deeper than the menu button right next to it (which doesn’t seem to be the case with E72). Isn’t that a problem when one wants to answer a call fast, I mean don’t they end up hitting the menu button instead? Would really appreciate your feedback on this, Jeb.

    Apexen,
I haven’t heard of any issues and I Twittered your question and haven’t gotten any responses. If I do I’ll post back here. I didn’t experience any issues when I played with it but that was only for a few minutes. Generally Nokia has rock solid devices in terms of their hardware.

    Thanks for reading my blog,
    Jeb
