Nokia E72 lets you Leave Your Point & Shoot Camera at Home

August 11th, 2009 · 17 Comments

So I’m very excited about the E72.  It’s going to rock, blah blah blah, I can talk about it for hours.  I think it will change a few things for many people.  It looks like your average QWERTY keyboard phone, it will have good email (I use emoze), it will hopefully include Ovi Contacts (but I’ll still download my current favorite IM app called Palringo), the voice quality and speaker phone will be Nokia esqu… great, and it will be an all around solid phone.

Now what I think may change things for people is the 5mp camera built in.  It is not N97 quality but I think people will start to leave their point and shoot cameras at home and start relying more on their phone.  We’re already seeing this but the E72 is the first business class Nokia that will have a 5mp shooter.  It will give people the option to leave their pocket camera at home.  Or in my case leave the N97 or N79 at home.

Do you leave your P&S at home or do you lug around a small camera and a camera phone?  If you do or plan on owning a 5mp camera phone do you think you would leave a pocket camera at home more?  Let me know what you think.

hi jeb. I got my first 5mp nokia n 82 in march 2008. Since then i have not touched my sony cybershot 8mp digital camera. I lost my phone recently but by then, i was so addicted to my phone doubling up as a camera that i did not buy the blackberry bold which i so desperately wanted and went ahead and bought n 79. I got some softwares like im+, profimail, and quickoffice 6 and got the enterprise capabilities. But yes, compromising on hardware is one thing i can’t do now ;)

    Ashutosh,
So what do you think, will you get the E72? It will give you the Blackberry usefulness with a 5mp camera.

    Thanks for reading,

I think I remember reading somewhere that the frame rate for video on the E72 was going to be something like 15 fps, despite shooting at VGA resolution.

    I really hope this isn’t the case…

    @AC,
That’s not good at all. 15fps is horrible but I still think I will worry less about bringing my digital camera. I just can’t be bothered any longer when my phone is shooting at 5mp.

While the E72 looks great, having a great camera that can replace a stand-alone digital camera is worth more to me right now. While I think that S60 FP2 runs circles around S60 V5, the fact that the Satio provides a Xenon flash is enough to make me deal with the atrocious text input and lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

    @RSM,
I can totally understand that you might need a superior camera to the E72. For me it should be fine. I mostly take pics of my daughter and close range images.

The 5mp camera on the E72 is another piece of good news for the E-series, as the 3.2mp camera on the E75 was. But you must remember that the megapixel count is not what matters most; there are a lot of things that factor in when it comes to image quality. The E75’s and 5800’s cameras, for example, are both of the same resolution but the 5800’s use Carl Zeiss lens, which makes for some difference. But I have to admit, the 5mp camera on this E-series device is rather tempting, but the lack of Xenon flash, a dedicated shutter key and the smallish sensor puts me off. My N82 does most of the job of my Nikon P&S since May 2008, and it’s been doing it wonderfully.

    6irard,
I’m really disappointed about the lack of a shutter key mostly but the flash also for me is kind of a bummer but I didn’t really expect it. I just don’t get why we can’t have a shutter key on the E72 since they put a shutter key on the E75 and E55.

wow. Jeb. I read lot of blogs and my rss is chock a block. But your site is amazing in terms of interactivity! You interact with every commentator on your blog!
I don’t know if i am still ready for e72. The camera sounds fine but i will wait for 6 months after the launch to find out if everything with it is as good as promised.
But specs wise, i don’t think anything else comes even near to it. The deal clincher for me would not be the camera but the speediness, more internal memory and faster processor. You review one on those, and then i would see if my small pocket has enough in it for this beauty. :)

    Ashutosh,
As far as I know the E72 should have a nice bump up from the E71 in terms of ram and internal memory. I can’t comment on the speed until I give it a try.
I appreciate that people read my blog and take their precious time to comment on it. The least I can do is comment back and interact with them.

    All the best,
    Jeb

About the shutter button, there’s something I’ve been thinking since it was confirmed that the E72 has an optical pad: there’s actually a way to have a ‘proper’ shutter key now.
You see, if Nokia want to get it right this time they would implement the shutter like this:
    - touch the optical pad -> focus
    - push the optical pad button -> takes the picture

Fairly simple and straightforward if you ask me, but there’s also something telling me that we won’t be seeing such a great use of the optical pad ’cause Nokia seems to be shortsighted lately (so much failures on the SW front)…
    Hope I’m mistaking though, we’ll see…

    Merlin,
It would sure be nice if Nokia included what you are talking about. I haven’t heard anything about that but I’ll be sure to check it as soon as I get an E72.

Thanks for reading my blog and taking your time to comment,

I read somewhere in last couple of days that that’s exactly how Nokia will implement the camera operation on the E72, i.e.
    - touch the optical pad -> focus
    - push the optical pad button -> takes the picture
Maybe someone in Espoo was listening to users after all!

  • 15 Jeb Brilliant // Oct 13, 2009 at 3:43 pm

You are absolutely right Rkhi. I kind of hoped for a dedicated camera key but E72 really is not the right device for it.
